Square of Přemysl Ottokar II with Samson Fountain

The square as the central public square in the historical centre of the town of České Budějovice, at present named after the founder of the town, the Czech King Přemysl Ottokar II, is one of the largest squares in the Czech Republic and is often listed among most beautiful squares as well. The regular square-shaped area of the square was developed in about 1265 and plots, approx. 8 metres wide, sectionized around the square were intended for construction of burghers´ houses. With the passage of time, the square was paved and a well and a place of execution were built there (in the place, once used as the place for execution, an erratic boulder can be found today). For a certain period of time, butchers´ shops had been located on the square before they were pulled down by order of Charles IV and moved to today's Krajinská street. The present landmark of the square, Samson Fountain, was built in the middle of the square in the twenties of the 18th century. The Town Hall, which got its present appearance in the course of reconstruction during 1684-1747, is situated on the southern corner of the western side of the square. In the first half of the 20th century, trams used to go on the sides of the square as well. Near the northeastern corner of the square, Black Tower and St. Nicholas Cathedral are located.

Black Tower

The Black Tower of České Budějovice is situated near the northeastern corner of the Square of Přemysl Ottokar II in the centre of the town. Getting to the gallery of the Tower means surmounting 225 steps and a successful visitor is then rewarded with a nice view of the beautiful surrounding area. The Tower is 72.29 m high and its construction was commenced in 1549.

Dominican cloister

The Dominican cloister with the Virgin Conventual Church is the most ancient sight of the town of České Budějovice. It was built together with the foundations of the town and it became a part of the town's fortifications. The cloister was founded around 1265. The presbytery of the church was completed before the end of the 13th century. Construction of the triple-naved church with the convent continued until the second half of the 14th century. An interesting fact is that apart from stone bricks were as building material as well. In the second half of the 15th century, a tower was built on. The cloister then existed until 1785 when it was closed. Despite the fact that the church was destroyed by fire several times, it has preserved its original early Gothic appearance up to the present day. The cloister is adjacent to the church. The original Gothic cloister tower with cross-arched vaulting was rebuilt to get its present appearance with a Baroque dome in 1772.
